The lobotomy

In the 30s Walter Freeman made the first lobotomy. A few years later, he manifested all its devastating effects.
Freeman developed a version which included reaching the frontal lobe tissue through the tear ducts. In transorbitale lobotomy, a mallet was used to allow the surgical punch (ie a sort of icebreaker 20 cm long and 5 mm thick) to pierce the layer of bone just above the eyelid. The punch was then moved vigorously in order to damage the frontal lobe. This technique could be performed as outpatients rather than in the operating room, and required only a few minutes. Freeman advocated this procedure for patients with mild symptoms and as a result, the practice of thousands of people.
The lobotomy has long been criticized by members of the medical sector. With the advent of chlorpromazine in the fifties, this practice began to seem barbaric and quickly fell into disuse.
